Q: Is this some virtual server thing?
A: Absolutely not! eSecureData.com rents physical servers for the exclusive use of each client. We do not do virtual servers or virtual anything. These are individual, physical servers with their own CPU, RAM, hard drive and power supply.
Q: Can I run PHP or CGI programs on an eSecureData.com server?
A: Absolutely. Linux servers generally come with PHP and CGI support preinstalled. We don't install PHP and Perl by default on our Windows servers as many Windows clients use ASP and ASP.NET and they don't want unnecessary software installed. It only takes a few minutes to install PHP and Perl/CGI support on the Windows servers, however, for those users who require it.
Q: Can I run database programs on an eSecureData.com server?
A: Absolutely. Linux servers generally come with MySQL, and Windows servers generally run the free version of MS SQL Server. Microsoft places some limitations on what can be run on Windows Web Edition servers.
Q: Can I run Sharepoint websites on an eSecureData.com server?
A: Absolutely. This very website was created with Windows Sharepoint Services and we run it on a totally standard eSecureData.com G5 server. Sharepoint Portal Server is a separate (but highly related) product which needs to be purchased separately if that functionality is required. Most people don't need the full Portal Server, however. Here is some information from Microsoft about the differences.
Q: I need a Windows server. Should I get Web Edition or Standard Edition?
A: If you're not sure, you should almost certainly get Standard Edition. Web Edition has a 2gb limit on RAM, and it's simply impossible to install SQL Server on Web Edition -- Microsoft has locked down that version of Windows pretty tightly. Before you order Web Edition, please be absolutely sure you understand the limitations clearly.
Q: Why are the Windows servers so much more costly than the Linux servers?
A: These prices simply reflect the cost of licensing Windows.
Q: How much for extra RAM?
A: At this time, we do not offer hardware customization of any kind. It's not that we don't want your business, but we're trying to offer the lowest prices in the industry, and customization just isn't an option at these price points.
Q: Will you install _______ ?
A: No. Sorry. Again, at these price points, we support core functionality only. Our world-class Linux and Windows servers are capable of running almost anything, however, and you are absolutely free to install it on your own. It's your server, and you have full root/RDP access to it. If you need a half dozen JVMs running in separate processes, go right ahead and set them up. Even if you have to hire a consultant to help you, it's still cheaper to rent from eSecureData.com and pay the consultant than to rent from a more expensive provider.
Q: Ok, since you wouldn't install _______ for me, I downloaded it and installed it, but it doesn't work correctly. Will you help me make it work?
A: No. Sorry. At these price points, we support core functionality only. You will need to contact your software vendor for support.
Q: If I cancel early, do I get a refund?
A: No. Sorry. Our pricing is based on the assumption that you will be completing your full term with us. Please rent your server for the amount of time you will need it, as no pro-rated refunds are offered.
Q: Can I get a discount, or will you give me a free trial to test your servers? I will recommend you to lots of people and will feature you on my website.
A: No. Sorry. Our prices are already the best in the industry by far, and there's no room for discounts.
Q: Can I switch between Linux and Windows?
A: Absolutely, but no pro-rated balances will be applied towards your new server and payment plan selection, so you should try to switch over at the end of a billing cycle. You will be responsible for transferring your domains to the newly deployed server. We recommend that you purchase a month of overlap time, so that you can transfer all your domains without time pressure.
Q: Can I host adult or highly controversial material on eSecureData.com servers?
A: Words like "adult" are not specific, and it's important to be clear on this. Very specifically, no illegal content will be permitted under any circumstances. If the sites you host contain legal material, we have no problem hosting them on eSecureData.com servers. Please see our terms of use for more detail.
Q: Can I host IRC/IRCd on eSecureData.com servers?
A: Sure, as long as you're able to set it up and maintain it yourself. Our support department can't help you with IRC/IRCd.
